A recent study by The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University Venice , in Venice Italy revealed that monoethanolamine, triethanolamine , and diethanolamine(MEA,TEA,and DEA)have the potential to be toxic to sea life depending on the concentrations of exposure. I wonder how this relates to nonammonia haircolors with ethanolamines being dumped down someone’s drain..especially salon drains in relation to exposure of these chemicals in the water tables.
Another study revealed drug remnants were present in our drinking water! http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-03-10-drugs-tap-water_N.htm
A more recent study revealed a possible link between prostate cancer and estrogen by-products from urine in our water.

It’s interesting how some companies disguise ingredients, or don’t list them at all.
Recently I noticed a company advertising organic propanediol to replace propylene glycol. This is a propylene glycol derivative, derived from the element CARBON and according to The National Cancer Institute as well as other studies, this chemical may cause broad systemic toxicity as well as possibly being mutagenic. So I am unsure why I would want to be exposed to this chemical at all.
What does organic mean? An organic chemical is merely a chemical derived from the element Carbon. In the periodic table there are 118 known elements so far. The chemistry of CARBON is called organic chemistry. The chemistry of other elements is called inorganic chemistry. So when someone says something is ORGANIC, are they referring to a carbon derived chemical or a chemical or substance not exposed to pesticides?
My daughter came home from a party with a lip gloss that she had won. It was a purple liquid in a glass tube, made from another country. The ingredient listing said “castor oil”. It was the only ingredient listed. The lip gloss had a fragrance and was purple!
I have never seen purple castor oil that smelled like bubble gum.

A recent study by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, published in the Journal of Occupational Medicine London reveals that people who clean professionally have a higher incidence of asthma. What does this have to do with hairstylists? Well the chemical in many cleaning products called ethanolamine is what is causing the asthma with repeated exposure. Ethanolamine is also the ingredient in the nonammonia haircolors. It has an odorless fume, yet it still affects the body by weakening lung function. How many of you stylists out there have asthma?

The journal of applied toxicology reports a medical study done at Kitasato University School of Medicine on the effects of inhaled monoethanolamine on bronchoconstriction. These results suggest that asthma-like symptoms may result partly from agonistic MEA effects at histamine-H(1) receptors and muscarinic receptors. This means non ammonia colors may aggravate or cause asthma in certain individuals. Just because you can’t smell it, doesn’t mean it’s not harmful.

A recent study in Germany indicates that some haircolors still contain toxic arylamines. But apparently all arylamines are not created equal, as some cause cancer and some don’t. The concentration apparently determines whether some are toxic. And some are toxic if they are present.
Some people think if a product has PPD it’s toxic. According to the FDA, PPD is toxic in amounts greater than 6%. EcoColors DARKEST color has <.2% PPD. Some people develope allergies to PPD with repeated exposures.
